What can you examine under a kids microscope?
Virtually everything can be examined under a kids microscope. Start with little magnification. Examine collected leaves with your child. Most of them have villi which are interesting for examining under a kids microscope.
The structure of a leaf and veins are clearly visible. Loot at a coltsfoot leaf from both sides. They are completely different: one is fuzzy, another one is not. First, let your child to identify by touch and then see it under the kids microscope. On a nettle leaf you can see urticating hair that cause so much trouble to child’s arms and legs. Tear off a leaf from each house plant. Each of them is interesting and unique in its own way. If there are only cactuses on the windowsill, they can sacrifice several barbs to science.
Flower petals are very beautiful. You can examine pollen under a kids microscope. To do this, carry with a soft brush from a flower to the microscope slide. If your child is interested, you can try to sketch how pollen from different plants looks like. Some kids microscopes are equipped with a special projector which project the image on the paper. So it will be easier to sketch. Examine skin and pulp of different vegetables and fruit. What do they have in common and what is different?
It is interesting to examine hair under a kids microscope and compare it in color and thickness. Cat’s hair appears to be thinner than human hair, and father's hair is thicker than child’s one. And a finger put under the kids microscope can create a real furor. Dirt under nails will be especially impressive. Of course, you can’t see any microbes there. But it looks awful even without them. It can be immediately followed by a demand to cut nails. It is also interesting to examine under a kids microscope what home dust is made of, how paper, cotton, threads, flocks of doll hair and soft toy fur, fish bones and scale, a grain of roe, honey, a drop of milk, crystal of salt, sugar, citric acid, soda, ice, different seeds and cereals, pieces of mushrooms, stones and seashell brought from the sea, cones, banknotes look like (there you can find different signs which are not visible without magnification).
If you have an aquarium you can scrape thin coating off from its walls, put on the kids microscope slide and examine on medium magnification. Believe you will get a magnificent picture! And swamp water that the child collected during his “expedition” can be also examined under the kids microscope. Even if you don’t see microbes there, you will see living moving creatures. It's fantastic! Besides zooplankton you can see under a kids microscope unicellulate algae with cilia. Sometimes there is frog roe, tiny tadpoles and larvae of water insects. And then examine tap water. Are there any living things there? Why?
Grow mold on bread with your child. Put a slice of bread in a glass jar with a cover, wet it and put it in warm place for several days (but not in the sun). Put a little bit of mold in a drop of water on the microscope slide and you can examine your sample under a kids microscope. You can examine ordinary baker's yeast. Pinch a small piece from a block and dilute in a drop of water. And it is also possible to couch a wheat seed and observe under a kids microscope every day what changes occur.
